Margaret Noel studied studio art and anthropology at Oberlin College, and earned her MFA in painting from the New York Studio School in 2005. She currently splits her time between her studio in Brooklyn and her position as an Associate Professor of Fine Art at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches drawing and mixed media.
Noel’s encaustic paintings fuse alternating layers of paper, pigment and wax to portray landscapes and interiors. Patterns become exaggerated, colors transformed, and shapes simplified. Each scene feels familiar but half-forgotten—a blurred remembrance rather than a precise rendering.
